Below is a list of descriptions for people, places, and things found in the Ambria series. Please be aware that some elements of the story are referenced in the descriptions, so this list is generally meant for those who have completed at least the first book.

Adados

Dace’s eldest son. A merchant-knight living in Thurlingia.

Amberia

Female mage of Ravenholt sent to aid Mountain Goat Pass.

Anaplekte

The keres of peaceful ending.

Apple

Kitchen girl in the Marshaling Ground barracks. Loves Gilder.

Aravah

Half-breed dryad apprentice mage to Dexithea. Able to cast powerful enchantments. Betrothed to Mage Volker.

Arrog

Eldest squire to Sir Donal. Age seventeen. Arrogant. Stocky, straight brown hair. Prefers to use a spear and dagger in melee.

Breda

Vetch's third cousin, an apprentice mage to Dexithea. Skilled at utilitarian magic.

Brent

Squire in service to Sir Brosnan.

Blue

Vetch's riding horse, has a blue-black coat and is quite nimble. While not a warhorse, he's been trained to act calm in battle.

Brandkyn

Captain-at-arms of the main gate of the Citadel of Ravenholt. Has a too-long mustache.

Brosnan

Knight of Ravenholt, and sword-master of the Marshaling Ground. He has four squires, Brent, Cade, Jace, and Prion.

Cade

Squire in service to Sir Brosnan.

Contine

Young apprentice to Dexithea.

Corwin

Knight of Ravenholt. Good at all chivalric skills, but notable in nothing. Envious of Sir Verandel's position.

Dace

Grandfather Highton’s brother and Vetch’s grand-uncle. A youngest son, he left the Domain of Ravenholt in his youth and travelled to distant Thurlingia.

Dark Lord

Chief antagonist, master of the Dark Legions. Hated by everyone in Ambria.

Dexithea

Female Mage of Ravenholt, member of the Council.

Donal

Knight of Ravenholt. Liege of Arrog, Dunn, Gilder, Lench, Rok, and Vetch. Known for his horsemanship and his magic two-handed rune blade. His device is a rearing white horse on a green field.

Dryope

Dryad of the Moon Pine.

Dunn

Tall and lanky squire to Sir Donal. Age sixteen. Likes to use axes and is very popular with females of any social class.

Egan

Captain of the Fort of Mountain Goat Pass. A middle-aged veteran warrior of common birth.

Fiona

Gilder’s older sister, age 19, a journeywoman artificer in the Citadel of Ravenholt a knight.

Frund

Oldest squire of Sir Verandel. Relishes his role as the dominant squire to the land’s most famous knight.

Gilder

Squire to Sir Donal. Cousin and best friend to Vetch. In love with Apple.

Grund

Gilder’s oldest brother, a journeyman artificer.

Hendle

Vetch’s middle brother. He is the Cave Master of Highton Valley.

Jia

Maid of noble birth, aged sixteen. Dunn holds her favor.

Jerrod

an apprentice to Dexithea.

Kell

Squire of Sir Corwin and cousin to Vetch.

Lench

Squire to Sir Donal. Follows Arrog's lead in everything. Uses a sword or ball-and-chain.

Lopek

Squire in service to Sir Brosnan.

Lina

Maid of noble birth, aged sixteen. Dark haired and very feminine. Owns an heirloom living spear carved by a dryad.

Maya

Maid of noble birth, aged sixteen.

Magon

Squire in service to Sir Brosnan.

Muia

Gilder’s mother, chatelain of Highton Valley.

Ondrej

Knight of Ravenholt. Becomes commander of the defense of Mountain Goat Pass.

Persimmon

Shepherd girl of common birth. Athletic, intelligent, resourceful. Has long, light brown hair and freckles on her face. Wears a ragged sheepskin jacket and a faded blue skirt. Very good with sling.

Plesner

Vetch’s father.

Pochard

A man-at-arms who guards prisoners in the Citadel of Ravenholt.

Raspberry

Owner of the Barnhouse tavern near the pass to Highton in the south-east corner of the Upper Valley. She runs it with her children.

Rok

Largest of the squires to Sir Donal. Uses a big shield.

Sabre

Head groom of the Upper Valley wall stables.

Sapo

Chief attendant of the barracks bath of the Upper Valley wall.

Sera

Lady of Highton Valley. Chatelain of the household. Vetch and Yohanan’s mother. Married to Plasner.

Sparrow

A drover living at the southeast end of the Upper Valley.

Taautus

Archmage and historical inventor of writing.

Toag

A retired man-at-arms who serves as the lift-master to Vetch’s family home in Highton Valley.

Trent

Breda’s father.

Ulf

Younger brother of Rok, and a page to Sir Donal.

Verandel

Knight Champion of Ambria and a trained mage. His recent ancestry includes a god, hence his dual nature. He carries the famed Raven Banner.

Vetch

Squire to Sir Donal, age sixteen. Protagonist.

Vicia

An assassin from Thurlingia. Wears striped trousers, has a narrow face and a long, pock-marked nose.

Volker

Mage sitting on the Council of Ambria. He is Aravah’s betrothed.

Yohan

Also known as Grandfather Highton, patriarch of the Highton Valley. nobility.

Yohanan

Vetch’s older brother, heir to Highton Valley and Castle. Over twenty years of age and married. While mostly an administrator, he keeps fit through constant practice at swordplay.

Bythos

King of the gods, harvest lord, master of time in its destructive element.

Helios

God of the sun, son of Hyperion and Theia.

Hemera

Goddess of creation, wife of Aether, mother of Cronus.

Hyperion

God of watchfulness, wisdom, and light. He is the husband of Theia and father of Helios.

Iapetus

God of craftsmanship, smith of the gods, judge of the dead.

Melinoe

Goddess of magic.

Theia

Goddess of glory in battle and the moon. Also known as Theia of Many Names. She is the wife of Hyperion.

Bridgecastle

A fortified bridge that crosses the Ambria River at the mouth of Silver Lake.

Citadel of Ravenholt

A massive castle that sits at the eastern end of the Upper Valley. This is where the mages have their sanctums and temples.

Fountain of the Sea Gods

A large fountain in the center of the Marshaling Square. It contains two statues representing the Sea Gods Aphros and Bythos.

Gardens of Divinity

A secret garden within the Citadel of Ravenholt that provides access to the Mountain of the Gods.

Marshaling Ground

A town built on the edge of the Upper Valley where it meets the Upper Valley Wall. It is laid out around by a large square dominated by the Fountain of the Sea Gods.

Mountain of the Gods

Where the gods dwell in their palaces. Only accessible via the Gardens of Divinity in the Citadel of Ravenholt.


RaceDescription
Acephali

A people without a head, with shoulders as high as where the crown of a person's head would be. Instead, their eyes, nose, and mouth are in their upper chests. Their skin is typically green, blue, yellow, or red.

Cynocephali

A dog-headed people with thin forearms and thick hindlegs. They run faster then people but slower than horses. They aren't very smart and are hated by horses.

Dryad

A race of godlings tied to trees.

Hecatonkeir

A race of hundred-armed and hundred-headed giants.

Keres

A race of godlings tasked with bringing the dead to the afterlife.

Mormolykeia

Vampire spirits in the service of the goddess Melinoe.

People

What you or I would call human. Ambrians, gunderlings, and thurlingians are all people.
